We often equate our children's age with their capacity for deep and complex emotions such as love, anxiety, guilt, joy, pain and everything in between. But they fell all these just as intensely, if not more than we do, especially because they're constantly struggling between our expectations of them and their own hopes and dreams. We need to give them some credit and know that the One who created them has put their own in-built shock absorbers in place. So we should let them cope with their failures, losses and the resulting pain and be avilable to comfort and guide them. This implies that the child who fails a promotion or entrance exam should be encouraged to repeat so that a lesson is learnt, and s/he works harder and is better equipped to do better. Our duty is to assure them that we LOVE THEM UNCONDITIONALLY and NOTHING CAN make us love them less. If we don't let them experience these failures and the valuable lessons to be gained, we deny them the opportunity to feel proud of their achievements. They will carry the badge of insecurity and dependency and never discover their parachute because they've been riding on your back. What happens when you're no longer there?
